Marni Resort Wear 2011, images from Notes on Fashion

Earlier in the season Marni presented their Resort collection for 2011; an exuberant and ecclectic mix of wearable pieces in a fantastic array of hues.

Keen to push the envelope Carolina Castiglioni’s models stand to attention in unthought of colour combinations; think blusher compact powder pink paired with black, and accents of camel juxtaposed against cobalt blue. And this is all in one outfit.

TheĀ ensemble sounds shocking but when seamlessly blended with Castiglioni’s masterful touch it creates a strong look that is anything but gauche.

The collection is awash with neutrals from taupe, crisp white and orangey brown; these colours are then mixed with highlights of pink, blue, green and orange.

A surge of youth and playfulness epitomises the collection, enhanced by the relaxed tailoring (see the final image- elongated tux jacket and white shirt with cycling shorts).

Post Christmas mini-break in Cannes?

As opposed to the seasonal offerings by the powerhouse designers resort wear is primarily clothing that can be worn throughout the year.

Resort originated when high-end designers and labels started producing collections for their affluent customers who would fly to warmer climes in the winter months.

The style is often loose, luxe and adaptable with nautical themes for those who might be spending New Year on azure waters on their yacht.

Fast-forward to today and resort wear is synonymous with transitional pieces that transcend seasonal boundaries. The clothes act as a buffer for the spring look soon to be sashaying down the runways.

Oscar de la Renta’s resort wear looks are among the most coveted by the fashion elite. This year saw a flurry of romantic dresses for play and some boxy tweed jackets and fitted sheath dresses for work.

There were also a few straw boaters thrown into the mix for fun.

Doing what Marni does best

A key aesthetic ethos for Marni is that their hippy styles from the past can be incorporated into timeless outfits with their modern collections.

This year there is a flash of ’60s and ’70s dressing seen in the hour-glass shapes, collars and short hemlines.

Castiglioni developed this retro look throwing it forward for the 21st woman with geometric print blouses, sculptural and voluminous high-waisted shorts and loose tailoring.

There are echoes of the past and features that move the clothing on into the future.
